Atwater Quadrangle
MINING IN THE ATWATER QUADRANGLE
Mining was only found in three sections in the Atwater Quadrangle. No maps have been found for these mines. Mine were only identified in the ISGS field notes by D. M. Collingwood in 1923. Seven of these mines worked the Herrin Coal, and one worked the Danville Coal.
Only the Springfield coal seam was mined in this quadrangle. The coal was approximately 6 feet thick and ranged from 150 to 215 feet deep. Horsebacks and clay dikes were frequently encountered and water was sometimes a problem.
