Mining in the Berryville Quadrangle

The known mining took place several miles north and west of Berryville. The Calhoun Coal was mined, which was shallow and generally less than 2 feet thick. The mines were noted by ISGS personnel during field work about 1930. Mining in the vicinity of Berryville was noted in the Coal Report in 1890, and probably took place through 1895. However, the individual mines were not tallied but grouped with mines from Cumberland, Effingham, Jasper and Pike Counties. It is likely that other mines were operated, although they were probably shallow surface mines that only operated a short time.
