Mining in the Birds Quadrangle
The Bristol Hill Coal was mined in the Birds Quadrangle. The Nettle Mine (mine index 7430) operated before 1882, and made a series of drift entries into the hillside because the roof did not hold up between mining seasons. The location of the Nettle Mine is only generally known, and is within 1320 feet of the location shown on the accompanying map. The Crawford Mine (mine index 2051) operated between 1959 and 1961 and removed only 614 tons.
