Gorham Quadrangle

Mining in the Gorham Quadrangle

Only one mine is known to have mined in the Gorham Quadrangle. The Poplar Ridge Coal Company (mine index 4238) operated a small slope mine which opened in 1931 and closed in 1934. The coal seam mined may be an un-named seam in the middle of the Tradewater Formation, but it has been called the Tarter Coal to locate the seam in the stratigraphic section.
