Mining in the Hillsboro Quadrangle
The earliest mining near Hillsboro began with the Hillsboro Mine (mine index 291) in 1888. The Hillsboro Mine also operated the longest, until 1941. Two other mines, one northeast, the other southwest of the Hillsboro Mine, operated between 1904 and 1924. The Herrin Coal ranged from 6.0 to 8.0 feet thick. The most recent mining is from the Deer Run Mine (mine index 1048),a longwall mine that opened in 2010.
