Keensburg Quadrangle
Mining in the Keensburg Quadrangle
The Friendsville Coal was mined between 1920 and 1940. It was generally between 30 and 60 feet deep and accessed by shaft, except at a mine in the northern part of the Keensburg Quadrangle (mine index 7478) that was a surface mine whose dates of operation are not known. The Friendsville Coal averaged 3.5 feet thick, and the mines were less than 10 acres.
In recent years (1973 to 2007), the Springfield Coal was mined at a depth of almost 800 feet. The Wabash Mine (mine index 921) worked over 14,000 acres in coal that averaged 6.5 feet thick.
