Louisville West Quadrangle
Mining in the Louisville West Quadrangle
The Iola Mine (mine index 733) is the only mine with reported production in the Louisville West Quadrangle. Production was recorded in the Coal Reports for 1963, but the coal was sampled in February 1954. The coal was at least exposed at that time, although coal excavation may have taken place only to get to an economic product below the coal. The coal was thin, only 2.5 feet thick, and had a 0.5 inch thick layer of pyrite.
Four other mine sites are shown on the accompanying map. The mines all operated before 1935, and probably had very low production. They were probably all surface mines, as one or two may have had the coal removed after the overlying limestone was quarried.
