Makanda Quadrangle
Mining in the Makanda Quadrangle
Mining in this area took place before 1935. One mine was found on an 1876 atlas. The coal mined was generally in thin pod-like deposits, rarely over 2.5 feet thick, that were not continuous over a large area. The coal has been correlated with the Tarter Coal, and at times was thought to be the Gentry Coal (formerly called the Battery Rock Coal.) It was often below a sandstone, so the roof was stable.
