Olney Quadrangle
Mining in the Olney Quadrangle
The known mining took place several miles south and southeast of Olney, home of the white squirrels. The mines were noted by ISGS personnel during field work about 1930. Mining in the vicinity of Calhoun was noted in the Coal Report in 1890, and probably took place through 1895. However, the individual mines were not tallied but grouped with mines from Cumberland, Effingham, Jasper and Pike Counties. It is likely that other mines were operated, although they were probably shallow surface mines that only operated a short time.
