Mining in the Salem South Quadrangle
The Salem Mine (mine index 2848) is the only mine known to have operated in the Salem South Quadrangle. The Herrin Coal was 885 feet deep. Unfortunately, no map of the workings have survived after over 20 years of operation and the closing of the mine in 1907.
