Mining in the Spring Garden Quadrangle

The Opdyke Coal was close to the surface in the Spring Garden Quadrangle, usually less than 40 feet deep. Although the coal was thin, rarely reaching 4 feet thick, it was economic to mine by stripping off the overburden. Mining ceased in 1979, when the Eads Mine (mine index 0917) closed.
