St. Rose Quadrangle
Mining in the St. Rose Quadrangle
The Herrin Coal was mined near Breese, and one mine extends northward into the St. Rose Quadrangle. The coal was up to 8 feet thick and a good roof was present in the northern part of the mine. Mining took place between 1887 and 1961, which makes this one of the longest-operating mines in the state.
