Ste. Marie-Quadrangle
MINING IN THE STE. MARIE QUADRANGLE
Mining took place in the northern part of the Ste. Marie Quadrangle. The Jourdan and Brown Mine (mine index 2510) removed less than 1,000 tons of coal in 1936 and 1937. The coal was thin, less than 3 feet thick, but readily accessible because the coal was the shallow, only 32 feet deep. Another shaft was begun about 4 miles east, but it failed to reach coal (mine index 2544). A small surface pit was also worked (mine index 2761).
