Mining took place in the Stewardson West Quadrangle between 1893 and 1947. These years are from mines whose locations are not known that had an address of Mode, which is quite near the mines whose locations are known. The Shelbyville Coal was mined, although it was thin, generally less than 2.5 feet thick.
