West Salem Quadrangle
Mining in the West Salem Quadrangle
The known mining took place over 4 miles north of West Salem. The mine were noted by ISGS personnel during field work in 1933. Mining in the vicinity of Parkersburg was noted in the Coal Report in 1890, and probably took place through 1895. However, the individual mines were not tallied but grouped with mines from Cumberland, Effingham, Jasper and Pike Counties. It is likely that other mines were operated, although they were probably shallow surface mines that only operated a short time.
