Mining began here in 1890 with the Peabody No. 5 Mine (mine index 0806). This mine closed in 1922 and 29 years later, Peabody No. 10 Mine (mine index 0693) opened. Peabody No. 10 operated for over 40 years, and held the record for the world’s largest underground mine for many years. Many different depositional conditions were encountered during mining, including a trough of coal up to 13 feet thick.
