Geological Problems Reported
The immediate roof was generally a light gray shale soapstone with black shale above. The gray shale ranged up to 30 feet thick. The black shale varied from 3 to 15 feet thick. A layer of clay with coal stringers and pyrite bands was sometimes present, between and adhering to the coal and draw slate soapstone. This layer was not present when the immediate roof was black shale. Pyrite was common in streaks and bands. One band was persistent throughout the mine, about 3 inches from the top of the coal, and another persistent band was noted 6 inches above the floor. Some step faults were present. Breaks and bulges were noted in the floor, generally trending NW-SE, and the coal was thrown as much as 11 feet. However, there was no trouble with heaving. The underclay was generally between 6 and 8 inches thick, sometimes as much as 12 inches. A sandstone was present beneath the underclay, and some of the underclay was sandy.
