Geological Problems Reported
A slabby sandstone was sometimes directly above the coal, but was generally separated from the coal by gray shale and bastard limestone. The coal contained 2 to 3 inches of black jack, but in some places, the black jack was up to 2 feet thick. The black jack was estimated to make up 10 to 15% of the volume of the coal. Calcite facings along the cleats were common. A clay parting was sometimes present near the center of the seam.
