Geology
Geological Problems Reported
The roof was drawn in haulage entries. The roof was a treacherous gray shale up to 20 feet thick that readily crumbled to powder when exposed to air and continually fell after the coal was removed. In some places, generally 50 feet across or less, the roof consisted of limestone with a black shale underneath. This limestone was difficult to bring down in the haulage entries. The fire clay floor creeped and heaved badly, because moisture from the sump readily seeped into the clay, moistening it almost to the working face. This underclay was 3feet thick or more.
