Geological Problems Reported
The roof was a sandy shale. The coal contained slips up to 8 inches wide and filled with a tough clay. The coal also had a band of shale “knobs” that was persistent but not continuous. Entries were abandoned when these two conditions were particularly bad. The light gray underclay of the floor was highly plastic and heaved badly when wet. Two pairs of entries shut down because of heaving.
