Geological Problems Reported
The 1885 Coal Report indicated Luther and Tyler mined within 34 feet of an abandoned mine that was filled with water. The state inspector had a copy of the abandoned mine’s map, and drilling boreholes from the surface to test the map accuracy as they approached the closed mine kept the mining from breaking through into the flooded mine. The abandoned mine was probably the Peanut Mine (mine index 2074) to the west.
