| Herrin The 1894 Coal Report indicated that the No. 1 shaft was deepened to 876 feet and a lower coal was mined alongentries extending 500 feet to either side of the deepened shaft. However, the top was found to be very poor, water seeped in, faults were numerous and the coal thinned, such that the lower seam was abandoned in March 1894
