The layer above the coal was 24 feet of compact massive shale that made a poor roof. In some places, up to 1 foot of limestone was directly above the coal, which made a better roof. Slips and rolls were present in the coal. A 1-inch band and lenses of pyrite were present about 12 inches below the top of the coal.
