Geological Problems Reported

The shallow depth of the mine meant that the roof rocks were weathered and allowed water into the mine, which caused some difficulties. Slips of 1 foot or more and filled with clay were abundant. The coal seam had 6 inches of “false bottom” that did not separate easily from the good coal for loading. Pyrite was present in vertical veins and horizontal seams.
