Main shaft Scott 14N 12W 21 NW According to the 1885 Coal Report (p. 546-547), the Bates Mine was one mile north of Winchester on the Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy RR; and the entries extended 1,800 feet. A general area of mining was added to the mine to depict the possible extent of the mine.
