Mine Index Number: 6077

Company Name: Alfred Cliff
Mine Name: Cliff Mine
Start Date: 1926 End Date: 1926
Type of Mine: Underground
Total acres shown: 80
Acres after map date: General Area of mining acres shown:

The outline and size of the mine or mines in this area is unknown and problematical. The ISGS field notes specified a shaft location at the southern end of the parcel shown on the accompanying map, and stated “mine worked about 40 acres north of shaft”. It seems unlikely that 40 contiguous acres were mined in this location; an area that size would require production from 120,000 to 200,000 tons. The unlocated mines shown at the back of this report shows no mines of that capacity. Subsidence of a shaft was rectified in 1999, and more subsidence was noted in 2007. Both areas are included within the outline for Cliff Mine, although 3 or more mines probably operated here, and mining may extend southward beyond the area shown on the accompanying map.

Shaft, Slope, Drift or Tipple Location(s)

Type County Township-Range Section Part Section
Shaft Marshall 13N 9E 14 NE SE NE The most likely location for a shaft whose workings extend northward is along the hill shown on the accompanying map at this location, NE SE NE. The location shown in the field notes is SE SE NE, but the written description was at SE SW NW. The field notes were unaccountably muddled, so two likely locations are shown on the accompanying map.

Shaft Marshall 13N 9E 14 SE SW NE This is the location of an air shaft with cribbing designated Western Avenue Mine by the Abandoned Mine Division of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The shaft was filled in 1999.
