Greenfield Quadrangle

MINING IN THE GREENFIELD QUADRANGLE

The Houchin Creek Coal was mined in the northern portion of the Greenfield Quadrangle, and the Herrin Coal was mined in the southeastern portion. Mining began before 1875, according to the 1875 Atlas of Macoupin County, and persisted through 1941. The mines were almost uniformly small (most less than 5 acres), with low annual production.
