Mining in the Kirksville Quadrangle
The 1875 Atlas of Moultrie County showed a mine operating under what is now covered by waters of Lake Shelbyville, near “Coal Shaft Bridge”. That early mine may have been very small, serving the needs of a few local farmers and blacksmiths. The next known attempt at coal mining took place in 1904, when the construction of a shaft south of the town of Kirksville resulted in the deaths of two men. The fatalities may have ended that attempt, as no production was recorded.
