S ½ The shaft location is very uncertain. The Coal Report described the location as “one mile south of the village or Kirksville” and “about half a mile” from the older mine. The shaft location may be up to ½ mile north and 3/8 (or more) of a mile east or west of the location as shown on the accompanying map.

None The shaft was sunk to a depth of at least 100 feet. No production was recorded in the Coal Reports (1904, 1905 or later). Presumably the shaft was not completed and entries were not driven. On June 28, 1904, two men working on the shaft were killed as the hook suspending the bucket used for lowering them gave way. Construction of the shaft may have ended with the fatalities or may have continued later. The “Prospective Mines” segment of the Coal Report (1904, p. 261) considered the outcome of the prospecting venture to be “problematical”. Whether the uncertainty of the outcome was based on the fatal accident or the economic prognosis for a mine at that location in generally thin coal is not known.
