Mattoon West Quadrangle
Mining in the Mattoon West Quadrangle
After construction lasting four years, the Mattoon Mining Company (mine index 2049) completed what was the deepest shaft (904 feet) in the state in 1882. The depth created a problem for the company by making construction of an air / escape shaft very expensive. That expense may have been the reason the mine was closed in 1888, with the air shaft only down 320 feet.
