| Air shaft The district inspector ordered the construction of an escapement shaft in 1884. In the 1885 Coal Report (p. 126), the inspector noted that the new escape shaft was under construction at the junction of the Illinois Central Railroad and the Peoria, Decatur and Evansville Railroad. This escape shaft would also be used as a hoisting shaft. The 1887 Coal Report indicated that the escape shaft was then 320 feet deep. The 1888 Coal Report (p. 416) stated that the escape / hoist shaft was not completed when the mine was abandoned in 1888. As the new shaft was also intended as a hoist shaft, it is likely that the shaft was of a considerable size (closer to 8 x 10 feet than 3 x 3 feet of later air / escape shaft dimensions).
