MINING IN THE PLAINVIEW QUADRANGLE

Mining appears to have only happened at one mine in the Plainview Quadrangle. Monterey Coal Company (mine index 0886) opened the Monterey No. 1 Mine in 1970 and it operated until 2008. This mine worked the Herrin Coal at a depth of 300 to 330 feet. In 2009, the mine reopened as MaRyan Mining LLC. The last reported production for this mine was in 2020, but the company lists this mine as currently idle. A shaft was sunk by Henry Brayford (mine index 7879) in 1899 that reached a depth of 144 feet, where a six foot seam of coal was found, but the mine never opened due to Brayford’s death.
