Mining in the Russellville Quadrangle

The Alpha Mine (mine index 0966), which worked the Bristol Hill Coal, operated for one month before disputes about the weight allowance on the county roads closed the mine in 1978. William Pritchard had surface-mined a nearby area about 20 years before the 1967 field work, but only 1 acre or less was mined for local use. In 2018 the Sunrise Coal Company, LLC, Oaktown Fuels No. 2 Mine (mine index 1056) extended into Illinois from Indiana. This mine is working the Springfield Coal.
