Summerville Quadrangle

MINING IN THE SUMMERVILLE QUADRANGLE

Only one mine is known to have worked in the Summerville Quadrangle. The Chesterfield Coal & Mining Company Mine (mine index 2911) began in 1882 and closed in 1888 due to lack of an escapement shaft. In 1893 the mine reopened as the Bremen Coal Company, once an escapement shaft had been installed. It closed for good in 1894.
