Varna Quadrangle
Mining in the Varna Quadrangle
The only mine known to have operated in this quadrangle was the Toluca Coal Company mine, which closed in 1924. It mined the Colchester Coal and the Danville Coal. The Colchester Coal averaged about 3 feet in thickness, and was at a depth of 500 to 550 feet in most places. The preferred method of mining the Colchester Coal in this northeastern part of the state was the longwall method. Unfortunately, no maps were located depicting the mining in the Danville Coal. Another small mine was said to have mined at Toluca in 1925, but there are no maps available for this mine.
