Geological Problems Reported
Pyrite balls were common. Some lenses of pyrite and bands of clay occurred in the coal seam. A few small slips (approximately 2 inches) in the gray shale roof extended into the coal. The underclay floor was 3 feet or more thick, and heaved slightly. (The dates of the mine notes correspond to workings in the Colchester Coal.)
