Wenona Quadrangle
Mining in the Wenona Quadrangle
Mining was said to have started as early as 1865 in the town of Wenona, although production records before 1882 are not available. The Wenona No. 1 Mine (mine index 0004) operated until 1925. A zinc smelter, which opened around 1897, operated to the north of the coal shaft for much of the operating life of the mine, using the coal from the mine to power the smelting operation.
Three small surface mines operated along Sandy Creek about 1935, three to four miles northwest of Wenona. Other mining in this quadrangle extended into the southwest corner from Toluca, and closed the year before the Wenona Mine.
