Winkle Quadrangle
Mining in the Winkle Quadrangle
Only one mine operated in the Winkle Quadrangle, from 1905 to 1935. The Bald Eagle Mine (mine index 0717) encountered three types of roof material. In some places the limestone was directly on top of the coal. In other areas, the roof was composed of white top, a soft gray shale that comes down immediately after coal removal, or black shale. Unfortunately, a final map is not available for the Bald Eagle Mine. The accompanying map shows barely over half of the area that was mined (291 of an estimated 531 acres).
