The Chapman Mine ([[4645|mine index 4645]]) was reputedly the second mine opened in Wabash County, circa 1865. The Simonds Mine ([[4646|mine index 4646]]) nearby was also an early mine, operating sometime around 1870. Most of the mines in the Mount Carmel Quadrangle were small, working the Friendsville Coal, which was thin, generally 3.0 to 3.5 feet thick. However, the most recent mine, the Friendsville Mine of Vigo Coal Company ([[1031|mine index 1031) is an active surface mine, a much more efficient way to access this coal.
