Geological Problems Reported
The roof was 2 to 6 feet of dark gray shale that contained sulphur balls and broke in slabs that fell if not propped. Roof rolls and horsebacks, generally trending northeast-southwest, were present, but few in number. The contact between the shale and coal was very irregular. Beds of black jack, sulphur, bone, and dirt were scattered throughout the coal seam. Some were persistent, while the rest were lenticular. Sulphur balls, distributed irregularly throughout the coal seam, were present over the entire mine.
