Geological Problems Reported
The immediate roof was 5 to 10 feet of gray shale soapstone with a black shale above. The mine notes contain the statement that the roof was not very good, and “the roof settles heavily so that the gob is pressed solid”. Breaks leading to surface subsidence were usually at an angle of 74 degrees up to the vertical. Occasional slips and rolls were small and infrequent. The coal had a clay parting ½ to 1 inch thick that included pyrite streaks. Pyrite was also present as lenses and balls in other parts of the seam. The underclay averaged 8 inches thick, but ranged up to 2 feet thick.
