Geological Problems Reported
A fault was noted with the northern side downthrown about 30 inches. The roof consisted of over 100 ft of shale above a 1 to 3 ft layer of soft flakey shale. Slips along clay horsebacks were common but the impact on mining was minimal. The seam was split into two benches; the upper bench was 30 to 40 inches thick and the lower bench was 36 to 48 inches, separated by a gray shale parting. Pyrite was present in streaks and plates along bedding planes. The upper bench of coal had pyrite bands. The floor was a gray shale that was firm when dry. Some heaving occurred.
