Geology

Thickness (ft)
Seam Depth (ft) Min Max Ave Mining Method
Murphysboro 131-160 3.1 5.2 3.7-4.6 The thickness averaged 3.7 ft in the southwestern part of the mine, 4.6 in the northwestern part of the mine, 7.0 in the eastern part of the mine where the coal was not split (NE 29-T8S-R2W), and 4.0 over the remainder of the mine. MRP

Geological Problems Reported

A fault was noted in the northeastern part of the mine, with the northern side downthrown 7 feet. Another fault was encountered 200 ft west of the shaft. Bone coal and pyrite were present in the seam in horizontal streaks. Pyrite was also present as lenses and on cleat surfaces. Shale partings were present in the seam, in all areas of the mine except NE Sec 29. In the northeastern part of the mine, this shale band thickened to 8 ft so that only the bottom bench was mined. In the southwestern part of the mine, another shale parting took 12 inches off the 4.7 ft thick bottom bench. This second parting thickened westward to 6 ft thick and then mining took place only in the bottom 44 inches.
