Geological Problems Reported

A fault was noted in the northeastern part of the mine, with the northern side downthrown 7 feet. Another fault was encountered 200 ft west of the shaft. Bone coal and pyrite were present in the seam in horizontal streaks. Pyrite was also present as lenses and on cleat surfaces. Shale partings were present in the seam, in all areas of the mine except NE Sec 29. In the northeastern part of the mine, this shale band thickened to 8 ft so that only the bottom bench was mined. In the southwestern part of the mine, another shale parting took 12 inches off the 4.7 ft thick bottom bench. This second parting thickened westward to 6 ft thick and then mining took place only in the bottom 44 inches.

↑ Production before July 1880 is unknown. The 1881 Coal Report indicated 25 acres had been mined. The 1882 Coal Report indicated the Lewis Mine had been abandoned. The Lewis Mine workings are incorporated into the entries of the Big Muddy No. 10 Mine.
