Geology
Geological Problems Reported
The Coal Reports enumerated the following gas problems: November 1911, 6 killed from a squeeze and gas near the working face; April 1912, 1 killed; 1915, 11 died from afterdamp. The roof was about half limestone and half "black slate". The top coal was thinner where the roof was limestone. The top coal was left up to protect the roof where the black shale was the immediate roof. The roof required timbering, especially near rolls and faults. Some "quicksand" above the coal was discovered when constructing the air shaft. Concretions were present throughout the mine. The fireclay floor heaved badly and slacked readily when exposed to air, and especially when exposed to water.
