Geological Problems Reported
The roof was composed of up to 3 feet of black shale with limestone above. The coal was thicker where the black shale was present. In some areas, up to 5 feet of shaley clod made up the roof. This white top clod came down more readily in north-south entries than in the east-west entries. At least one room had a roof of very calcareous black shale with the lower 12 inches containing large concretions. The coal usually varied both in thickness and quality with the character of the roof. The coal was generally 2 to 3 inches thinner under the black shale than under white top, and about 6 inches thinner under limestone than under black shale. The coal with limestone roof was also the dirtiest. Some small slips and rolls were found in parts of the mine. The coal contained shale bands, lenses of bone coal, and charcoal bands. The blue band was ½ to 1 inch of carbonaceous shale that was 6 to 9 inches above the floor. Calcite and pyrite were present on facings. The underclay, which averaged 4 feet thick, heaved badly when wet.
