Geological Problems Reported

The limestone cap rock was present and ranged from 2 to 3 feet above the coal. The immediate roof was a laminated black shale that was “frozen” to the coal, which increased the ash content. Top coal ranging from 4 to 9 inches was left up to reduce the ash content by leaving the roof rock in place. Horsebacks were common in some parts of the mine. A persistent thin band of laminated clay and pyrite was present, and some portions of the coal contained concretions, pyrite lenses, and lenticular clay masses. The floor was 12 to 20 inches of underclay. Heaving was not a problem.
