Geological Problems Reported
The cap rock was poor limestone up to 8 inches thick, but not always present. The immediate roof to the coal was up to 10 inches of black shale, and the intervening layer was draw slate up 10 inches thick. The black shale often stuck to the coal. Clay layers up to 1/4 inch thick were noted as well as occasional pyrite nodules. One pyrite boulder was seen in the gob that was 3 to 4 inches thick and 12 to 18 inches long. Horsebacks of clay and spar were numerous. Floor heaving took place when the entries were wet.
