Geological Problems Reported

The roof was composed of 12 to 15 feet of limestone above up to 4 feet of black shale above up to 6 inches of white top and clod. Some shrinkage slips were noted under the white top and clay “clod”. The white top seemed to be a gray soapstone with very little tenacity and supporting power. This material was in lenses in slight hollows in the surface of the coal and beneath the black shale. Generally the slips were seen along the margins of the lenses of the white top, and the slips continued down into the coal. In those places, the coal was offset by as much as 1 foot. Pyrite was present in the coal as plates, commonly 15 inches and 30 inches below the top of the coal. The floor was 20 to 24 inches of fireclay, and heaved in the haulage entries.
