Percy Quadrangle
Mining in the Percy Quadrangle
Mining in the Percy Quadrangle was dominated by large surface mines: Streamline Mine (mine index 0872), Burning Star No. 4 Mine (mine index 0932), and the Captain Mine (mine index 0873). A contributing factor was the ease in obtaining coal from both the Herrin and Springfield Coals, which in some areas were only 15 feet apart. Most of the underground mines were of modest size and operated in the Herrin Coal. Mining began here before 1876, as shown by several mines on an 1876 atlas, and continues to the present day.
