Geological Problems Reported

The roof was 15 to 20 feet of limestone above 10 to 30 inches of black shale. The limestone pinched out on the western side of the mine, which halted mine expansion in that direction because of the bad roof. Some of the black shale was more of a draw slate, practically impossible to keep up, and was generally removed right away. In some areas, however, the shale was a better roof and was timbered. Many slips and rolls were seen in the black shale. The slips were small and did not extend down into the coal. The rolls were usually less than 10 feet in diameter and came down into the coal about 2 feet, with a roll diameter of 10 feet. The slips and rolls did not affect mining in any appreciable way.
